Program Type: Full-Time (28 Weeks) and Part-Time (65 Weeks)

The Health Care Assistant program (HCA) will prepare students to work in a variety of health-related work environments. The health care needs continue to grow in our country. Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge for a career in care-giving with the hands-on experience. HCA has been recognized by the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry and the Ministry of Advanced Education in B.C. and follows the provincial curriculum, implementing a common set of training standards and graduating competent front-line health care providers.

The Health Care Assistant program was reviewed and approved by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training.

Courses – Phase I

HCA-PROF Introduction to HCA Program (5 Hours)
HCA-IP Introduction to HCA Practice (30 Hours)
HCA-CP Concepts of Practice (70 Hours)
HCA-COM 101 Health 1: Interpersonal Communication (50 hours)
HCA-LC 201 Health 2: Lifestyles and Choices (30 hours)
HCA-CHC 101 Healing 1: Common Health Challenges (95 hours)
HCA-MHC 201 Healing 2: Caring for Individuals Experiencing Mental Health Challenges (60 hours)
HCA-PALL 101 Palliative Care (40 hours)
HCA-PCA 301 Healing 3: Personal care and Assistance (130 hours)

Courses – Phase II

FoodSafe Level 1 (8 Hours)
Standard First Aid with CPR C (16 Hours)
WHMIS (8 Hours)
Mental Health First Aid (10 Hours)
Provincial Violence Prevention For Health Care Workers (8 Hours)
HCA-CPE 400 Clinical Placement in Multi-Level and/or Complex Care (210 Hours)
HCA-CPE 410 Practicum Experience in Home Support and/or Assisted Living (80 Hours)
Career Strategies for Health Care Workers (10 Hours)

* B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, or mature student status 19 years of age

* Criminal record check (in accordance with the Criminal Records Review Act)

* English 10 or equivalent with a grade of C (for native speakers of English)

Passing English language competency requirements;

* International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or General within the past two years; with an overall score of 6, OR Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) within past two years; iBT with an overall score of 76.
